Myomectomy is a surgical procedure to remove fibroids present on the uterus. This procedure removes the fibroids and leaves the uterus intact. Fibroids are seen in women of child bearing age and may cause infertility. Myomectomy reconstructs the uterus and improves your chances of pregnancy.
Your fertility specialist may recommend a myomectomy instead of hysterectomy (removal of uterus) if you plan to have children in future or fibroids are impairing your fertility.
Myomectomy may be performed using any of the following methods
Laparoscopy several small incisions are made in the abdomen to gain access to the uterus
Hysteroscopy- instruments are inserted through the vagina and cervix to gain access to the uterus
Laparotomy open abdominal incision is used to gain access to the uterus
