Importance of Hormone Assays

FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone), LH (luteinizing hormone), progesterone and estrogen are involved in the process of ovulation. The secretion of FSH depends on another hormone called Prolactin secreted from the pituitary. Thyroid gland disorders can also affect fertility.

The various hormones affecting fertility are

  • AMH (Anti Mullerien Hormone) hormone produced by the ovary reflects the ovarian reserve and the eligible eggs for fertility.
  • Estrogen- is responsible for development of the uterine lining (endometrium). Estradiol, a form of estrogen indicates the number of healthy eggs in a cycle.
  • Progesterone- is responsible for successful implantation of the embryo.
  • FSH and LH control ovarian function
  • Testosterone and androgens may be produced in small amounts by the ovaries and adrenal glands. High levels of these male hormones may affect ovulation.
  • Thyroid Function test – Thyroid hormones and TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) secreted from the pituitary gland play an important role in fertility management.
  • Prolactin imbalance can cause irregular periods and affect ovulation

Male Hormonal Imbalance can affect the quality and quantity of sperm produced. The male hormones affecting fertility are

  • FSH stimulates sperm production whereas LH is essential for the secretion of testosterone essential for reproduction
  • Testosterone produced by the testis affects the sperm motility and count
  • Abnormal Prolactin? levels result in abnormal semen production.
